Common dental emergencies

If you’re not sure it’s an emergency, call. We’ll tell you honestly how soon you need to be seen.

Severe toothache

Throbbing or constant pain is often a sign of infection or deep decay.

02

Chipped or broken tooth

Save any pieces. Many breaks can be fixed with bonding or a crown.

Time matters most. Try to be seen within an hour.

04

Swelling or abscess

Facial or gum swelling can signal infection that needs prompt care.

05

Lost filling or crown

Keep the crown and bring it in. We can often re-cement it.

06

Broken denture or appliance

We’ll assess the damage and get you functioning again.

Right Now

What to do before you arrive

01

Knocked-out tooth

Pick it up by the crown, not the root. Rinse gently, and put it back in the socket or keep it in milk. Come in immediately.

02

Toothache

Rinse with warm salt water and floss gently to remove anything stuck. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed.

03

Broken tooth

Rinse your mouth and save the pieces. Use a cold compress on your cheek to reduce swelling.

04

Swelling

Apply a cold compress and call us right away. If swelling makes it hard to breathe or swallow, go to the ER.
